Movie Review: Bakwit Boys

PicsArt_08-18-12.25.27

Bakwit Boys  Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2018, August 15-21.
Direktor: Jason Paul Laxamana
Manunulat: Jason Paul Laxamana (story and screenplay)

K. Filipino isang dakilang pamanang Bayan.

Cinemalaya 2018 – The Lookout

I watched the movie The Lookout, one of the finalists in the 2018 cinemalaya14 full-length category last Tuesday night. The movie is under the direction and screenplay of Afi Africa as he described his movie as the story of “survival of the fittest”.

The story was solid in telling how the world we live in isn’t fair. It depicts the reality that only the strong survive.

The Lookout tells the story of a gay hired killer whose childhood life brought him into the life of crime. George/Lester promised himself to return to his mother and make him pay for what they did. During his childhood, he and his sibling Grace was sold by his mother to a syndicate just to meet the financial needs of his mother’s live-in partner.

The movie stars veteran actors Yayo Aguila, Efren Reyes, Jeffrey Santos and Rex Cortez. Andres Vasquez portrays the role of Lester Quimabao.

I don’t find the “kilig moment/scenes” of Lester and Travis still necessary. I guess it could be better and relevant if they could add more gun-for-hire scenes for Lester and Travis. I lost my interest in the middle of the film because of too many scenes that are unnecessary.

Watch and support the Cinemalaya14 entries. It opens last August 3 and will end August 12, 2018, at Cultural Center of the Philippines and selected Ayala Malls.

Gee Gee at Waterina ang musikal

An original Filipino musical, Gee Gee at Waterina ang musikal will be staged anew by Artist Playground premieres on August 18, 2018.

posterWEB_Geegee

Gee Gee at Waterina is an original story by prolific playwright Jose Dennis Teodisio and under the direction of Mr. Andrew de Real with the music of Jesse Lucas.

It was 2006 when I first learned this as an entry for short film at Cinemalaya Film Festival, Lou Veloso as Waterina. When I saw the ads posted on Instagram I knew it was the story behind Walter Dempster Jr., a.k.a Walterina Markova with film adaptation under Gil Portes and starred the late actor Dolphy in the 2000 Metro Manila Film Festival.

When I read the synopsis on the Instagram post, I commented “napapanahon” pertaining to the story because somehow most if not all in the LGBTQ community can relate. I know some are afraid to be left alone and have the fear of getting older being gay.

Gee Gee at Waterina is not just a story of friendship or of being gay but a story of someone who has the strength and confidence to survive in their twilight years. However, for everyone, or for every LGBTQ member it is okay to be alone or to be old as long they were living their life, confidently beautiful, happy and Gay!

Gee Gee at Waterina ang musikal stars award-winning actor Roeder Camañag as Waterina “a comfort gay” in the 1940’s Japanese occupation. Gee Gee portrayed by theater actor Norman Penaflorinda who in real life character was the late Pasay City Councilor Justo Justo a.k.a. JJ.

For those interested and curious to know what is the musical is all about watch them as the show runs August 18-19 and August 25-26 at Arts Above, Artist Playground II, 112 West Venue Building, 112 West Ave., QC (beside McDonald’s).

Taal, the Heritage Town of Batangas

The cold and rainy day last Sunday never stopped us to travel in our destination, Taal, Batangas. It was a two-hour drive from Buendia terminal as we boarded Jam Transit going to Lemery and dropped off to Flying V San Nicolas, Taal. Since it was not really a pre-planned tour we decided to visit first the Taal Basilica. It was really amazing to saw the beautiful Taal Basilica also known as the Minor Basilica of Saint Martin de Tours.

The tourist was very busy taking photos while their backdrop is the largest church in Asia. I noticed the vendors outside the church were very accommodating. They will offer you assistance for your picture taking to capture the full view of the Basilica.

The interior amazed me from the pillars, ceiling, and its artistic designs. I’m no knowledge about the architectural style of this church but it was good needless to say it is one of a kind.

The Sunday was really an unlucky day for me because after a few shots my phone turned off because of I forgot to charged it the night before the Sunday. Likewise, heavy rains fall as we headed towards the Public Market.

I don’t have pictures of the Public Market where you can buy Tapang Batangas and garlic longganisa. Also, you will notice some stalls sell different kinds of Barong Tagalog and gown as they were famous for their craftsmanship.

We have Lomi for breakfast. I don’t know if it’s the famous Batangas Lomi but its delicious taste served with toppings makes me full and feeling heavy. after eating. we have a friendly conversation with the staff inside that mini restaurant asking where and how to go to the Basilica of Our Lady of Caysasay. They instructed us we can walk going there or we can ride the tricycle. But we insisted to walk so we can be familiarized ourselves with the place.

After 15 minutes walked we have reached the San Lorenzo Ruiz Steps and according to some local, it is about 125 steps. We met some children who sell candle and tell some story about the Patron Our Lady of Caysasay.

They even told us to visit the well from the church going upstairs you will reach the way when you reached 22 steps. At the entrance, you will notice a gold color pump and in a few steps you will find the landmark which we thought it was the ruin of the old church but they say it was just the place where the image of Caysasay found.

Sky Ranch Tagaytay experience

This is not the first time doing traveling solo. My first solo travel happens 4 years ago going to Pangasinan to visit the Our Lady of Manaoag.  It is almost a four-hour drive from Pasay to Urdaneta to Manaoag. Since I am not familiar or doesn’t have any idea going to there “tata nong” (nag tatanong) is always with me. Anyway, my visit to Tagaytay is not really planned as it is an abrupt decision to go there. The first plan along with my colleagues is to visit Majayjay Falls but then it was canceled because of so many reasons. Because I already scheduled my rest day and I really wanted to go somewhere to at least forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

I decided to look for DIY solo travel blog on the internet to my destination and searched for the nearest bus terminal which has a daily trip to Tagaytay.  One of the suggestion is to ride Bus at the Bunedia Terminal but to no avail after minutes of waiting. The time is precious for my day tour and traveling solo I decided to go to Edsa Rotonda Terminal for sure there are buses going to Tagaytay. I boarded in Bus bound to Nasugbu, the fare is around P 83.00  I asked the bus conductor to drop me at Tagaytay rotunda commonly known as “Olivarez” with landmarks such as the like of  Chowking, McDonald and the New Mall by Filinvest – Fora Life Malls.

davdav

I go inside the mall and decided to have my lunch there but I have noticed the absence of some popular fast food chain, instead, I roam around the mall to check but a few stores are opened maybe because it’s new.  I ended up eating lunch at Chowking.

At the time, the city has Zero visibility, we all know that Tagaytay has a perfect climate. You will feel the breezy afternoon when I walked from Rotunda to another mall Ayala Malls Serins.

dav

I ride a jeep going to SkyRanch with a minimum fare of 9.00 pesos. Just look with the signboard of NBI/Sky Ranch. As we headed towards our destination I enjoyed the cold air and drizzling afternoon.

I paid the Sky Ranch entrance fee of 80.00 pesos. But they have this promo entitled Great Days Treat happening from July 04 to October 7, 2018.

dav

I am not really a fun of a Theme Park but I enjoyed my short stay even I didn’t experience any of their rides.  But really amazed when saw the Tallest Ferris Wheel in the country as they claimed. Sadly because of fog, I was not able to sight the Taal Volcano.
